Addressing skill gap in an automated future

A recent project is identifying and addressing the skill requirements a future workforce will need in the face of increasing automation.

HIA representative Sharyn Casey, Relationship Manager, will be part of a group of industry representatives consulted throughout the project which will investigate skill gaps in citrus, horticulture and across different industries.

 Skills Impact has been commissioned by the Australian Industry Skills Committee (AISC) to undertake this task.

The project will identify skill requirements a future workforce will need, and the impacts automation will have on industry and the workforce. Ultimately, the project aims to address these skills gaps by developing a “Case for Change” which will recommend training tools.

To ensure cross-industry involvement, a Project Reference Group has been established to represent the voices of different industries including meat, agriculture and production horticulture, and food industries. Each member of the group will provide industry-specific insight.

Currently, the project is continuing to consult stakeholders and investigate the current training products available. Initial findings suggest that soft and transferable skills will be valued as jobs transform and more changes occur.
