Celebrating another Japanese tariff cut

Citrus Australia joined the Federal Trade Minister, Steven Ciobo, at Grove Juice’s bottling and distribution centre in Brisbane on April 1 to celebrate the third round of tariff cuts for exports into Japan.
The tariff cuts were secured under the Free Trade Agreement with Japan. Under the deal, the tariff for oranges has fallen from 16% to 11.6%, for mandarins from 17% to 13.8%, and for grapefruit from 10% to 5%.
These cuts helped boost exports of oranges to Japan to record levels last year, with growth of 14.4%, equating to $36 million.
There have also been significant tariff cuts in exported juice.
Since the Japan deal was finalised last January, Grove has enjoye¬d sizeable tariff cuts, down from as high as 25% to 4% for citrus juice without added sugar.
The economic deal with Japan means Grove has been able to produce a further 69,600 bottles of fresh Australian orange juice, which equates to 289 tonnes of Austral¬ian oranges.
Mr Ciobo said the Japan Australia agreement, and those with Korea and China, extend the open trading environment and make exporting a more attractive prospect by guaranteeing new levels of access to these markets.
