Australian growers can improve their competitive edge in Asia by growing citrus with smoother rinds.
Steven Falivene and Andrew Creek of the NSW DPI want to conduct a scoping investigation in growing smoother rind citrus.
“To help industry learn how we can make Australian citrus smoother, we want to help growers in the Riverina, Riverland and Sunraysia compare Washington navel rind texture and cultural practices anonymously,” Steven said.
“The aim is to collect some baseline data and if interesting results eventuate and it’s an industry priority, we can start from a more informed base to develop a more extensive project next season,” Steven said.
To take part, growers need to nominate themselves, pay $80 for a leaf analysis and send leaves for analysis between mid-February to mid-March.
Growers then outline block details and practices and show Andrew and Steven your block near harvest so they can rate rind texture. Results will be available in a workshop and report.
